Setting up Duo for Two-factor Authentication
Duo is a two-factor authentication tool that the University uses to keep systems and information safe. Two-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to your Onyen and password by asking you to confirm your identity using something you have – like a mobile device or landline phone – after you enter your Onyen and password. Many UNC applications and processes require Duo authentication.
Setting up Duo
Before starting set up, make sure you have the device you want to use for Duo nearby. People most commonly use their cell phones.
- Visit onyen.unc.edu and click 2-Step Verification for Duo.
- Click the Login button.
- Enter your UNC Personal Identification Number (PID), date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN). If you don’t have a SSN, you’ll be asked additional questions as part of your Duo setup.
- Follow the steps on the screen, which vary according to the device you’re adding. For instance, if you’re using a smartphone or tablet, you’ll be asked to download the Duo Mobile app.
