Who is an Authorized User?   Who is a Proxy User?

An Authorized (“third party”) user is someone that you want to be able manage financial-billing tasks, for example, to pay tuition bills.

A Proxy user is someone that you want to be able to see or manage non-billing information such as enrollment, grades, and checklists.  Proxies are also  “third party” users.

You may want the same person to have access to both your financial-billing information and your non-billing student information.  That person is a Proxy/Authorized user.

Setting up Proxy Users and Authorized Users are two separate processes.  In both cases:

  • You, the student must initiate the process in ConnectCarolina.
  • The proxy or authorized user receives an email from Connect Carolina that he or she has been given access.
  • The proxy or authorized user creates his or her own ConnectCarolina password.

Click on the tabs below to see the steps you need to take to grant access to a Third Party.

This is a Carolina Blue icon of a hand with a dollar sign floating above it.When you give someone access to pay your bills in ConnectCarolina, you set them up as  an “Authorized User.”

If your parents pay your bills, they must be set up as Authorized User to access Student Financials – Bill Pay in ConnectCarolina.  This keeps your banking information safe. Keep in mind that as a student, you must enroll in 2-Step Verification (Duo) to see or give access to financial-billing information.  Authorized Users DO NOT need to set-up 2-Step Verification; however, they cannot use student Onyen credentials to access ConnectCarolina.

Before you begin these steps, be sure that your pop-up blocker is turned off or disabled.

1. From connectcarolina.unc.edu, click the Login to Student Center button, and log in to your Student Center.

2. Under the Finance section, click the Pay Bills/Manage Student Finances link.

Result:  You will see a screen with information about securing your financial information with Duo 2-Step verification so that the system knows that it’s really you. You will need to choose an authentication method, so it’s best to have your mobile phone with you before you proceed.

3.  Click the Verify with 2-Step link.

4. Choose how you want to verify, whether it is by push, phone or passcode.

Result: Once you verified your account, you will see the following screen.

5.  Click Continue to Pay Bills – Manage Student Accounts button.

Result: The UNC-Chapel Hill Student Account site opens in a new window.

6.    Click the Authorized Users button.  From this page, you can give others (parents, employers, etc.) the ability to access your account information.

7. Enter the email address of the authorized user and click the Continue button.

8.  On the Agreement to Add Authorized User screen, Check the I Agree box and click the Continue button.

Result: The person you’ve made an authorized user receives two emails:

  1. an automated message informing the user that a student has granted access to his or her online student account.
  2. an email with a temporary password to use to log in the first time.  Once logged in, the authorized user will need to change the password to a permanent one.

The authorized user is not required to use 2-Step verification-Duo.

When you give someone access to see non-billing information in ConnectCarolina, you set them up as a Proxy user.  Both you, as the student, and the proxy (parent, guardian etc.) must complete all four steps to complete the process.

Before you begin these steps, be sure that your pop-up blocker is turned off or disabled.  Follow the process below to add a Proxy:
