To keep sensitive information safe, the University uses a security method called 2-Step Verification. With this method, you verify that “you’re you” before you see certain sensitive information. Enrolling in 2-Step takes just 10 minutes and helps keep you and UNC secure.
2-Step is already required for online access to W-2s through ConnectCarolina, and you likely already use similar 2-Step methods to secure your non-UNC email accounts, bank and credit card accounts and other online accounts. What’s new is that 2-Step will soon be required to access certain campus VPN groups including Campus VPN. 2-Step will also be coming to more campus services in the coming year.
2-Step Verification Benefits
The main benefit of activating 2-Step Verification is a significant increase in protection of your account.
Here’s how that happens:
- 2-Step helps keep attackers from accessing your email, documents, payroll, personal information, and research data.
- 2-Step requires a unique security code each time your account is accessed on an untrusted device, application or web browser.
- If you receive a security code or notification when you’re not trying to log in to your account, you’ll immediately know someone else is trying to.
